You can usually get a lost Walmart receipt back in a few minutes. If you paid with a card saved in your Walmart.com account, the purchase is likely already in your Purchase History. If not, Walmart's store receipt lookup tool can find it with five details: the store location, the date, the card type, the last four digits of the card and the receipt total. Online, pickup and delivery orders are easier still, because the order page itself works as proof of purchase.
This guide walks through each route, explains why the lookup tool sometimes comes back empty, and shows how to read the codes printed on a Walmart receipt. The steps below come from Walmart's own help page on store purchases and receipts, checked in October 2026.
Way 1: Check your Purchase History first
Walmart adds many store purchases to your online account on its own. According to Walmart's help page, this happens when:
You paid with a card saved in your Walmart.com account. The store purchase is added automatically. Walmart also adds other store purchases made with saved cards in the last 12 months.
The name on the card matches the name on your account. If the names differ, the purchase may not appear.
You paid with Walmart Pay, or you scanned the receipt with the Walmart app. These show up even if you have turned off automatic store purchases.
To check, open the Walmart app or Walmart.com, select Account, then Purchase History, and look for the store visit by date. If it is there, you do not need the lookup tool at all.
Way 2: Use the Walmart receipt lookup tool
If the purchase is not in your Purchase History, use the store receipt lookup tool at walmart.com/receipt-lookup. Have these details ready before you start:
The ZIP code, or the city and state, of the store where you shopped
The purchase date
The card type and the last four digits of the card
The exact receipt total
Then follow the steps in order:
Enter the store location.
Select the purchase date.
Enter the card type and the last four digits.
Enter the receipt total.
Complete the captcha.
Select Lookup receipt, then download your receipt.
Walmart suggests using your bank or card statement to confirm the date and the amount. That one step solves most failed searches, as the next section shows.
Why the lookup tool cannot find your receipt
When the tool returns nothing, the cause is usually one of the details, not the tool. Check these in order:
The total is not exact. The tool needs the full receipt total, including tax. A rounded number or the pre-tax price will not match.
The date is off by a day. Card statements often show the date a charge posted, which can be a day or two after you shopped. If one date fails, try the day before.
The store location is wrong. If you shopped near a city line, try the ZIP code of the store itself rather than your home ZIP code.
You did not pay by card. The tool searches by debit or credit card. For cash, gift cards or any payment other than a debit or credit card, Walmart's help page tells you to use its Chat with us option instead.
The receipt was split. If the cashier ran two transactions, each one has its own total. Search for each amount on its own.
If none of this works, bring the card you paid with to the store's customer service desk. An associate can often search for the transaction there.
Online, pickup and delivery orders
Orders placed on Walmart.com or in the app do not need the lookup tool. Walmart's help page says the barcode at the bottom of the order in Purchase History serves as your proof of purchase. To find it, select Account, then Purchase History, open the order and scroll down past the totals and payment details.
To print a copy, open the order in Purchase History on Walmart.com, select View details and use the print icon at the top left of the page.
How to read a Walmart receipt
Walmart does not publish an official guide to the codes on its receipts. The meanings below are the ones most widely reported by shoppers and former staff, so treat them as a practical guide rather than an official key.
ST# is the store number.
OP# identifies the cashier or operator.
TE# is the register, or terminal, used for the sale.
TR# is the transaction number for that register.
TC# is the long transaction code printed near the barcode at the bottom. It ties the paper receipt to the sale in Walmart's system.
Each item line shows a short, abbreviated product name and a long number. That number is the item's product code, usually its UPC. If an abbreviation makes no sense, type the number into the search bar of the Walmart app or Walmart.com. It often brings up the exact product, though some store-only and produce items will not show a result.
Letters printed after a price mark how that item was taxed. The letters and their meanings differ from state to state, so compare them with the tax lines near the bottom of the same receipt rather than relying on a list from another state.
Using a found receipt for a return
A receipt you download from the lookup tool, or a store purchase that appears in your Purchase History, gives the store a record of the sale. That usually makes a return much simpler than a true no-receipt return. Our guide to the Walmart return policy without a receipt explains what changes when no record can be found, including ID checks and store credit.
How to stop losing Walmart receipts
Scan the receipt with the Walmart app before you leave the store. In the app, tap the barcode icon in the search bar and scan the barcode at the bottom of the receipt. The purchase is then saved to your account.
Save the card you use in your Walmart.com account. Store purchases with that card will then appear in Purchase History on their own.
Photograph long or expensive receipts. Walmart receipts are thermal paper, and the print can fade.

Frequently asked questions
How far back can I look up a Walmart receipt?
Walmart's help page does not state a time limit for the receipt lookup tool. For automatic Purchase History, it says purchases made with saved cards in the last 12 months are added. For older purchases, try the tool first, then ask the customer service desk.
Can I look up a Walmart receipt without a card?
Not with the online tool, which searches by card type and the last four digits. If you paid with cash or another method, use Walmart's Chat with us option or ask at the store.
Is my Walmart app Purchase History proof of purchase?
For online, pickup and delivery orders, yes. Walmart says the barcode at the bottom of the order serves as proof of purchase. For store purchases, a receipt downloaded from the lookup tool is the clearest record.
How do I find out what an item on my Walmart receipt is?
Type the long number next to the item into the Walmart app or Walmart.com search bar. It is usually the product's UPC and often brings up the exact item.
What is the TC number on a Walmart receipt?
It is the long transaction code printed near the barcode at the bottom of the receipt. Walmart does not publish an official definition, but it is widely understood to identify that specific sale.
