Dollar General is America's largest retailer by store count — with more than 19,000 locations across 47 states, you're almost certainly within five miles of one. Every in-store purchase prints a receipt that serves as your proof of purchase, return authorization, and EBT/SNAP transaction record.
A standard Dollar General receipt includes the store number and address, cashier ID, transaction date and time, itemized list of products with individual prices, applicable coupons and discounts, subtotal, sales tax, total amount due, payment method (cash, card, or EBT), and a DG Rewards barcode if you're enrolled in the loyalty program.
Dollar General's standard return window is 30 days from the date of purchase. Here's exactly how it works:
With receipt: Full refund to your original payment method for most items in new, unused condition.
Without receipt: Store credit up to $5, government-issued ID required. Dollar General limits no-receipt returns to prevent abuse.
Exceptions: Alcohol, tobacco, and seasonal items are typically non-returnable. Electronics have a 30-day window with original packaging.
90-day confusion: Some shoppers search for a 90-day policy — this does not exist. Dollar General's policy is 30 days. The 90-day figure may come from confusing DG with Walmart or other retailers.
Bottom line: keep your Dollar General receipt for 30 days. If you lost it, use the DG app to look it up digitally.
Beyond the basics, Dollar General receipts contain several unique fields:
Store number: A 5-digit number used for return processing and receipt lookup.
DG Rewards barcode: Scan this at future visits to earn savings through the DG app loyalty program.
EBT/SNAP balance: If you paid with an EBT card, the remaining balance prints at the bottom of the receipt — useful for budgeting.
Penny sale items: Clearance products marked for $0.01 (penny items) are identified by a special code on the receipt, often "CLR" or a pennied-out SKU.
Coupon savings line: Manufacturer and DG digital coupons show the discount amount applied.
Survey invitation: Most receipts include a customer satisfaction survey code for a chance to win $100 in DG gift cards.
Lost your receipt? Dollar General offers two ways to recover it:
DG App: Download the Dollar General app, sign into your account, and navigate to "My Receipts." If you scanned your DG Rewards barcode at checkout, the receipt is stored automatically.
In-store manager: Bring your payment card to the store. The manager can sometimes pull up recent transactions by card number and date, though this is store-by-store.
Note: Digital receipt recovery requires that you were enrolled in DG Rewards at the time of purchase and used the same payment card. Cash purchases without a Rewards scan cannot be recovered.
Dollar General accepts EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) cards for eligible food items. Your EBT receipt will show:
Total EBT-eligible items purchased
Amount charged to your EBT account
Remaining EBT balance
Non-EBT items paid separately (cash or card)
If you need a duplicate EBT receipt, the in-store manager can reprint it from the POS system on the day of purchase.
Interestingly, Dollar General stores sell blank receipt books — spiral-bound pads used by small businesses, landlords, and service providers to write manual receipts. These are typically located in the office/stationery aisle and cost $1–$3. If you're a landlord, contractor, or sole proprietor who needs simple paper receipts, Dollar General is one of the easiest places to grab them in person.

Dollar General gives you 30 days to return most items with the original receipt. Bring the item in new, unused condition and receive a full refund to your original payment method. Returns are processed at any Dollar General location — you don't need to return to the original store.
No receipt? Dollar General allows returns without a receipt for store credit up to $5. You must present a valid government-issued ID, and Dollar General tracks no-receipt returns by ID to prevent abuse. If your purchase exceeds $5, keeping your receipt is strongly recommended.
Enrolled in DG Rewards? Open the Dollar General app → tap "My Receipts" → find any past transaction where you scanned your rewards barcode. You can view, screenshot, or email the digital receipt directly. This is the easiest way to recover a lost Dollar General receipt without visiting the store.
